Spirometry - Routine Lung Function Assessments & Testing

Spirometry, Routine Lung Function Assessments & Testing

This is a method of assessing lung function by measuring the volume of air that the patient is able to expel from the lungs after a maximal inspiration. It is a reliable method of differentiating between obstructive airways disorders (asthma and restrictive diseases where the size of the lungs is reduced, e.g. fibrotic lung disease). Severity of disorders cannot be predicted from clinical signs and symptoms alone, Mediright conduct full spirometry testing routinely when performing lung function tests in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the respiratory system generally. SPIROMETRY EXPLAINED

What is a Spirometry Exam?

Spirometry is a simple test used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breathe out in one forced breath.

It’s carried out using a device called a spirometer, which is a small machine attached by a cable to a mouthpiece. The test works by measuring airflow into and out of your lungs.

When you’re ready for the test, you’ll be asked to:

  • Inhale fully, so your lungs are completely filled with air.
  • Close your lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
  • Exhale as quickly and forcefully as you can, making sure you empty your lungs fully.
